About Random World City Generator

Pick a random city anywhere in the world, or narrow it to a continent, a country, a population range, or capital cities only. Each pick lands on a world map with the city's region, country, population, local time, and coordinates, plus links to Google Maps and Wikipedia. Pick up to 25 cities at once, then copy the list or download it as a CSV.

Random world city generator with a map

Press Pick a city to get a random city from anywhere in the world. A pin drops on the map, and the result shows the city's region, country, population, current local time, and coordinates, with links to open it in Google Maps or look it up on Wikipedia.

The gold dots on the map are the cities that match your filters, so you can see where the choices are before you pick. Choose a continent or a country and the map zooms to that area on the next pick.

Random city generator by continent or country

Tap a continent above the map to pick only from that part of the world. To pick a random city in one country, choose it from the Country menu. GeoNames places all of Russia in Europe and Turkey in Asia, so Novosibirsk counts as a European city here.

  • Asia: 5,145 cities
  • Europe: 1,784 cities
  • Africa: 1,553 cities
  • North America: 1,399 cities
  • South America: 1,150 cities
  • Oceania: 78 cities

Random capital city generator

Turn on Capitals only to pick from the 239 capitals in the list, one for each country or territory. It works with the other filters, so you can pick a random capital in South America (there are 14) or one of the 19 capitals with 5 million people or more.

Generate a list of random cities

Set How many to 5, 10, or 25 to pick several different cities at once. Each one gets a numbered pin on the map. Tap a city in the list to move the pin to it and see its details.

Copy the list as text, or download a CSV with each city's region, country, continent, population, coordinates, time zone, and whether it is a capital.

Pick a random city by size

The list includes every city with at least 50,000 people, so most picks are smaller cities: 8,811 of the 11,109 have fewer than 250,000 people. Use City size to pick only mid-size cities (250,000 to 1 million), big cities (1 to 5 million), or the 68 megacities of 5 million or more.

Favor big cities keeps every matching city in play but weights the pick by population. Shanghai, with almost 25 million people, is about 400 times as likely as a town of 60,000.

FAQ

From GeoNames, a free geographic database published under CC BY 4.0. The list has 11,109 cities in 242 countries and territories: every city GeoNames lists with 50,000 or more people, plus every capital, including small ones like Vaduz and Funafuti. City districts that GeoNames lists as separate places, such as London boroughs and Paris arrondissements, are left out. Population figures are GeoNames' numbers and can be a few years old.

Yes, by default. That means smaller cities come up often, because there are far more of them: about 80% of the list has fewer than 250,000 people. Turn on Favor big cities to weight picks by population, so a city of 2 million is 10 times as likely as one of 200,000.

Turn on Capitals only. Picks then come from the 239 capitals in the list, one per country or territory. Combine it with a continent to get a random capital in Africa, for example, or with City size to get only capitals of 1 to 5 million people.

Choose the country from the Country menu. The number next to each country is how many cities it has in the list, and the map zooms to that country when you pick. If a continent is selected, the menu only lists countries on that continent.

Not until every city that matches your filters has come up once. With Europe and Capitals only selected, you get all 53 European capitals before any repeats. Clearing the recent picks starts over.

Set How many to 5, 10, or 25 and press Pick. The cities appear as numbered pins on the map and as a list. Copy the list as text, or download a CSV with each city's region, country, population, coordinates, and time zone.
