About Random Month Generator

Spin a wheel of the 12 months to pick a random month, with its number, days, season, and quarter. Add a random day or a year from any range, pick several months at once, keep the wheel to one season or the months you choose, or invent a set of fantasy month names for a fictional calendar.

Random month wheel

The wheel has 12 equal slices, one per month, colored by season: blues for winter, greens for spring, golds for summer, and oranges for autumn. Press Spin and the pointer stops on the month that was drawn. Switch between North and South and the colors follow that hemisphere's seasons.

Take months off the wheel under Options and it redraws with only the months that are left, each with an equal slice.

Give me a random month

One press gives you one month and the facts you are likely to need next: its number from 01 to 12, how many days it has, its season, and its calendar quarter. February shows 28 days, or 29 when the result includes a leap year.

  • Choose a month for a trip or a party
  • Set a random deadline or start date
  • Give story characters a birth month
  • Run a classroom or party guessing game

Pick a random month and day, or a month and year

Turn on + Day and each pick gets a real day in that month. Turn on + Year and it gets a year from the range you set, anywhere from 1 to 9999. With both on, the result reads like Thursday, February 14, 2019, and Copy can give you 2019-02-14 instead.

Pick a month, or several at once

Choose 3 or 6 to draw several months in one spin, or All 12 to get every month on the wheel in random order. A list never repeats a month until every month on the wheel has come up. Copy it as full names, short names like Mar, or numbers like 03.

Keep the wheel to Winter, Spring, Summer, or Autumn, or tap single months on and off. A run that crosses the new year, like November to February, works the same way.

Month name generator for fictional calendars

A made-up world usually needs its own calendar. The fantasy section invents 12 month names in one of four themes and maps each one to the real month it replaces, so January might become Frostmere, for the hard frost of the coldest weeks.

Old-tongue names are built from real Old English, Latin, and Welsh roots, such as hrīm (frost) and Līþa, the Old English name for June and July. Moons & stars names draw on traditional full moon names, zodiac dates, and meteor showers.

FAQ

Yes. Every month on the wheel gets the same size slice and the same chance. Each spin draws a number from the Web Crypto API (crypto.getRandomValues), and the wheel stops on the month that number picks. If you take months off the wheel, the ones left share the odds equally.

Turn on + Day above the wheel. Each pick gets a day that exists in that month, so you never get April 31. Without a year, February days run from 1 to 28. Turn on + Year as well and February 29 can come up in leap years, and the result also shows the weekday.

Yes. Turn on + Year and set the range under Options. By default it runs from 1900 to the current year. You can use any range from 1 to 9999, and both ends are included. With + Day on too, you get a full date such as Thursday, February 14, 2019.

It works like drawing months out of a hat without putting them back. Every month on the wheel comes up once before any month comes up again, then a new round starts. The status line under the wheel shows how many months are left in the round.

The tool uses meteorological seasons. In the Northern Hemisphere, winter is December to February, spring is March to May, summer is June to August, and autumn is September to November. Switch the wheel to South and the seasons flip, so July becomes winter.

Pick a theme: Seasons & weather, Harvest & farming, Moons & stars, or Old-tongue roots. The tool builds 12 different names from word roots, one for each real month, and gives each a one-line meaning. Old-tongue names come from real Old English, Latin, and Welsh words. Reroll any name you don't like, then copy the whole calendar.
